About us

ABALAMBAN is a non-government development organisation working in the Gaibandha District.

 The organization was established by a few young student leaders who fought for establishing democracy against the autocratic ruler from 1982 to 1990. After 1990 these young people started social work and operated relief work during the 1992 flood in the Gaibandha district. From that embryo, the organization was formally established in 1992 after a general meeting held at Gaibandha. The Executive Committee was formed and volunteerism has been chosen as the main working style of the organization. In 1996, ABALAMBAN got registration with the Department of Social Service and started social and economic empowerment of women activities through its ‘Nakshi Shambhar’ project by forming several women groups. In 2004, it receives external funding first time from the Swiss Development Cooperation through the Interco operation for Extreme Poverty Pilot (EPP) project where disaster management, relief, and rehabilitation were a major part. In 2006, ABALAMBAN established a partnership with IED/The Asia Foundation on the Civic rights education project. In 2008, it established a partnership with HASAB/Global Fund for HIV/AIDS reducing project.

In addition, another project called “Jonouddyog” is a continuous project since 2008 with the support of EED-Germany/IED to promote activism and social mobilization for human rights, the environment, and social harmony. In 2008, it receives foreign funds for operating relief work from West Point Impex Inc. USA.  In the same year, ABALAMBAN got registration from NGO Affairs Bureau. 

More About Us

Since its inception, it has been operating various programs including the empowerment of marginalized, excluded, and vulnerable people including women, youth, ethnic minorities, Dalits, and Persons with disability following a rights-based and service delivery approach. At present 1000 Ethnic Minority and 320 Dalit households are getting livelihood support from ABALAMBAN. It has organized ‘6 Union Level Platform’ including extreme violence area at Gobindagonj Upazila by engaging people from Ethnic minorities, Dalit and mainstream, and 5 Upazila and one District level ‘Peace Forum’ also organized and facilitate for rights, peacebuilding, and dignity by the engagement of ethnic minorities, religious leaders, civil societies, journalist, and government officials at Union to District level. There are also involving 150 youth from an ethnic minority, Dalit, and mainstream for rights, peacebuilding, and dignity. ABALAMBAN is given the first support to the Adivasi and Bengali people after the conflict between Adivasi-Bengali peoples and Sahebgonj Bagda Firm Authority and has continuously given support to them till now. ABALAMBAN’s role in the ongoing Adivasi Land Rights Movement of Gaibandha is well known to all. ABALAMBAN is playing a catalytic role in making them enable to establish linkage and networking for peace building among Adivasi and Mainstream. ABLAMBAN also linkage the people of this area with Govt./Non-Govt. service providers for better livelihood, rights, peacebuilding, and dignity. ABALAMBAN maintains very good linkage and networking with civil society members, govt. line agencies at district and Upazila levels.

Presently ABALAMBAN is an active organization in the Gaibandha district for establishing rights, peacebuilding, and dignity of the Ethnic minority and Dalit people. ABALAMBAN is implementing programs with limited resources supported by Bread for the World-Germany/IED, UNDP, Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF), and the voluntary contribution of local people and Board Members at present.

The Vision of ABALAMBAN is to contribute to establishing a society, which is socially just, pluralistic, democratic, economically productive, and ecologically balanced, where all people can explore their innate potential for an equitable social and natural environment.

Our Mission

The Mission of ABALAMBAN is to Human and Institutional Development of target people so they can be the driving force for their change and can establish their rights peace building and dignity through united standing, voice raising, media campaign, mobilization, etc. ABALAMBAN believes that the participation of the poor people is necessary for changing their condition and position.
